Representing the aspirations of students is at the heart of The Student Workshop, who have an integral role in a Drama student’s experience at Royal Holloway. Each year group and degree pathway (single or joint honours) within the department will elect one representative who will work with the Student Workshop Committee, the Department of Drama & Theatre and the Students’ Union to ensure that the voice of the students on their course is heard. They attend the Staff/Student Committee meetings throughout the year on behalf of their fellow students and work closely alongside Alice Jessop, our overall Staff Student Rep (a.k.a. ‘department rep’) to ensure Royal Holloway's renowned Drama department progresses in the quality of its courses and with its students in mind constantly. Students can speak to any Staff/Student Representatives all of which have email addresses that are posted in the Green Room.
The Staff/Student Committee meetings occur at least once every term and are attended by lecturers and student representatives, providing an invaluable forum for discussion between staff and students about issues affecting their academic lives at Royal Holloway. Minutes and actions arising from every meeting are emailed to all Drama students, as well as posted on Facebook and displayed in the green room.
This is where you can play a crucial part.
If you have any comments, compliments or concerns about your courses – please talk to one of us! We will be able to discuss the matter with you and address it as best we can to ensure that your experience of studying Drama here is the best it can be for you. You reps will also hold “Focus Groups” each term to give students a chance to meet up and discuss how they are finding their degree programmes and to offer any suggestions for improvement – as well as have some lovely cake and win some fantastic prizes (nothing like a bit of incentive, eh?). Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for these!
If you are a member of the department and The Student Workshop, the Staff/Student Committee will be looking for passionate individuals to represent their peers at the start of each academic year, so if you’re a good listener with a passion for getting involved then why not be a Staff/Student Committee Rep? Not only will you play a crucial role in the running of Royal Holloway's drama department, but it will look great on your CV and you will also receive a written reference from the Head of the Department. If you have any questions about what the role entails then feel free to contact Clem Jones via his email address or find him within the department!
Remember that the job of our reps is to represent YOU. If at any point you want to discuss, in complete confidence, a matter that affects you, don’t hesitate to contact them to arrange a meeting.
